Vaccine uses immune system to eliminate breast cancer
A new vaccine which uses the patient's immune system to control and eliminate breast cancer will go on trial by the end of the year, according to Taipei-based Optimer Biotechnology Inc. The treatment, which from initial results showed an average four-year survival rate of 78 percent, was developed by Optimer Pharmaceuticals Inc., Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and Taiwan’s Academia Sinica.
The trials, which have been approved by the Department of Health, will be conducted at 15 local cancer centres over a two-year period. The total number of participants could rise to 350 patients if access to conduct clinical trials in Hong Kong, Singapore and South Korea is approved.
